Welcome to the Open-Science Harbour: Ions in Freiburg
This harbour was built to support for trapped-ion quantum physics research at the University of Freiburg. It is a place to collect frameworks, prepare for scientific exploration, and share results—structured so that visitors can distinguish what transfers across laboratories from what remains local to ours.
All content carries an explicit scope label:
Global (G) content describes constraints or structures intended to hold across laboratories and research fields.
Local (L) content records our specific equipment, choices, and experiences here in Freiburg.
Because these scopes serve complementary but distinct purposes, the labelling avoids ambiguity about what claims universality and what does not.
What This Harbour Provides
The harbour organises content by the role it plays, not just its scope:
Coastlines (Invariant Frameworks) define boundaries between what is physically or logically possible and what is not. These boundaries cannot be violated. Coastline documents are meant to be verifiable across harbours and independent of any particular laboratory. They chart the territory.
Equipment (Essays) provides tools for exploration: conceptual frameworks, interpretations, and motivations that help navigate within those boundaries. Equipment reflects perspective and context. Different crews may favour different tools while respecting the same coastlines.
Handbooks (Implementation Interfaces) record operational practices tested in specific settings. They show how particular voyages were conducted, without claiming to be unique or authoritative. Different harbours may develop different handbooks for similar waters.
This separation allows global constraints to remain stable while local practices evolve independently—without conflating universal limits with contingent choices.
How to Navigate (by Example)
Navigation relies on two cues: the scope label in page titles (G or L) and the role the document plays (coastline, equipment, or handbook).
G – Causal Clock Unification Framework A global coastline. It formulates minimal, falsifiable conditions under which different timing systems—atomic clocks, Earth-rotation measurements, pulsar timing—can be compared consistently. The framework defines boundaries that any compatible system must respect. Other harbours should be able to verify the same coastline independently.
L – The Bias I Carry A local piece of equipment. It reflects a particular perspective shaped by experience, judgement, and context. It does not claim universality. Such documents help interpret maps and motivate exploration, but they are not constraints.
L – Structure Your Research A local handbook. It documents practices that have proven useful in our setting: how we organise work, structure projects, or navigate recurring challenges. These procedures instantiate global constraints but are neither unique nor mandatory. Other crews may adopt, adapt, or ignore them.
Use page titles to identify scope. Read each document according to its role: some define boundaries, some provide equipment, some record tested practice. Together, they form a navigable harbour for open scientific work.

This responsibility has a specific shape: I am accountable for accurate representation, integrity of attribution, transparency about uncertainty, and openness to correction. These are the commitments I can make—and the commitments against which this work should be judged.
But responsibility of this kind cannot be exercised in isolation. Everything documented here relies on the work, care, and integrity of many others—students, colleagues, institutions, historical authors, reviewers, engineers, tool builders, and communities that maintain shared scientific infrastructures. I trust that these sources acted responsibly; in turn, I ask you to trust that I have done my best to act responsibly in selecting, interpreting, and presenting them.
This creates an unavoidable self-reference: responsibility rests on trust, and trust rests on responsibility. There is no external vantage point from which to verify the whole chain. At best, we can acknowledge the loop openly and build structures that keep it visible.
When errors are found—and they will be—I commit to transparent correction rather than silent revision, and to documenting substantive changes in a correction log maintained alongside this harbour. The harbour's integrity depends not on being right the first time, but on remaining correctable. This is not a weakness; it is the condition under which knowledge can improve.
This harbour is part of an ongoing attempt to order knowledge without claiming final authority over truth.
We work with models, frameworks, and measurements. We refine structures, test boundaries, and improve coherence. But we never know with certainty how close we come to "true values"—only whether our instruments, methods, and inferences are internally consistent and externally testable. The struggle to navigate this uncertainty is not a flaw in the scientific enterprise; it is the condition under which scientific work becomes meaningful.
Some elements of this harbour are stable commitments: responsibility, transparency, openness to correction, and respect for the limits of what can be known. These are not negotiable.
Other elements—interpretations, applications, extensions, critiques—remain open. Authority here flows from use, not endorsement. If you find something worth building on, build. If you find something worth challenging, challenge. The harbour offers structure, not control—a place to test maps before sailing.

By you, I mean the full network of agents, conditions, and constraints that make this work possible—and against which it will be tested:

Students and future researchers,
Institutions and archives that preserve and transmit knowledge,
Instruments and laboratories that generate the data we interpret,
Software, algorithms, and computational tools that extend our reach and shape our methods,
And the physical universe itself—the source of constraint, the final arbiter of empirical claims, and the horizon none of us can step beyond.
This last inclusion is not rhetorical. Scientific knowledge is not a conversation among humans alone. It is a disciplined attempt to let the universe speak back—through measurement, through failure, through the resistance of things to our descriptions of them. Addressing the universe directly acknowledges that our responsibility extends beyond social accountability to something harder: correspondence with what is actually there.
Complete detachment from this universe—a view from nowhere, an ordering of all things from outside—would be the ultimate epistemic achievement. It is also impossible. Recognising that impossibility is part of the ordering process. We are always inside the system we are trying to describe.
